Please join us in honoring the life and legacy of Coach Gene Pingatore, the legendary basketball coach who dedicated over 50 years to shaping young athletes and making history at St. Joseph High School.

This celebration will pay homage to Coach Pingatore’s remarkable career, record-breaking 1,035 victories, and lasting impact on the basketball community. From mentoring future stars like NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas to inspiring generations with his unwavering commitment to excellence, Coach Pingatore’s influence extended far beyond the court. 

Please join us for an evening of reflection and celebration as we honor the legacy of a coach, mentor, and friend who will forever be a cornerstone of Illinois basketball history.

David Kaplan ( IBCA Hall of Fame Class of 2016) is a veteran Chicago sports broadcaster, analyst, and former radio host. He is best known for his work covering Chicago sports, particularly with ESPN 1000 and NBC Sports Chicago. Kaplan hosted the long-running radio show Kap & Co. and was a key figure on the television program Sports Talk Live. A passionate and knowledgeable voice in the sports industry, he has covered major Chicago teams, including the Bulls, Bears, Cubs, and White Sox, throughout his career. Kaplan has also worked as a college basketball scout and is recognized for his deep connections in the sports world.

Under the guidance of legendary coach Gene Pingatore, Thomas honed his game and his grit, rising from Westchester, Illinois to become a standout player. Recruited by Bobby Knight, he led Indiana to a national championship, forging a path that would inspire generations. This connection—Pingatore, Thomas, Knight, and Indiana—is a powerful reminder of how talent, when nurtured with purpose, can transcend circumstances and shape history.
